Visit 'Horror in the Modernist Block' - an exhibition at Ikon
11am - 5pm, Tuesday - Sunday, until 1st May 2023
Ikon Gallery, 1 Oozells Street, B1 2HS
This exhibition focuses on the direct links between the horror genre and modern architecture, using our city as its starting point. Birmingham is renowned for its brutalist buildings (did we mention that already? 😏) and horror’s tropes (suspense, darkness, fear) combine perfectly with the city’s backdrop.
Matt found it a brilliant visit back in November, and we feel it’s the perfect experience for this cold, dark January!

This birds eye view of ‘the new Birmingham’ taken on 13th June 1973, showcases Madin’s soon-to-be-completed Central Library, New Street Station, Queensway & the newly completed George Marsh/Seifert’s Alpha Tower for ATV.
It’s always fascinating looking back at how the City Centre used to be; I find a particular interest in seeing what was considered modern at the time. Look how much greenery there was back then, too!

Read about Jim Kerr (AKA Seven 9 Signs) and the trade of sign writing.
The man behind our infamous 'Alright Bab!' graphic, talented signwriter and former street artist Jim Kerr has been profiled by the BBC during his work on the captains' board at Silhillians Rugby Club, near Solihull.
Having known Jim for over a decade, we loved learning a little more about his process and how his trade has developed over time.
He’s left his mark across the city; you may have seen Queensway House or Assay Lofts adorned with his work. Take some time to get to know the craftsman a little better!
