This Summer, The BCLM opened its brand new high street to the public, allowing us to step back into living memory for the first time.
Experience the magic of the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s by listening to era-defining vinyl in Stanton’s Music Shop, viewing the latest fashion trends in E. Minett’s Ladieswear and checking out some questionable hairstyles in Laurie Thomas Hairdressers.
There’s new characters to meet, vintage transport to spot, and stories to explore; this is definitely worth venturing out of Brum for!

The blues in the window reflection compliment the warm tones of the concrete and I found the composition so absorbing. The shadows tie it all together making this shot, aesthetically, very impressive!

Watch this BBC News segment on the New York Street Art show from 1987
Aimed at helping young artists get off the streets and encouraging them to use their talent to build a career for themselves, the New York Street Art show in 1987 involved New Yorkers T-Kid, Vulcan and Nicer whilst exhibiting work from Goldie and 3D.
However, the Midlands Today news segment was accused of patronising the event, with reporters dismissing the art form as ‘straight forward damage to property.’
Gary Hudson, the newsreader at the time, has since commented on the video claiming it was not all negative, but simply contained negative comments that merely reflected the debate at the time. We’ll let you be the judge of that!
